Joerg will show how to control a digital Märklin model railroad using using a solution based on Arduino and Android. Modern digital model railroads made by Märklin use the CAN bus known from the automotive space to have their various proprietary control devices talk to each other. With the help of a little piece of electronics based on an Arduino microcontroller it is possible to open this world to other devices, such as Android phones and tablets.
 
The talk is divided into two parts: The first half explains how the Arduino interface to the CAN bus it built. The second part shows some aspects of the implementation of the Android app that provides the user interface. Of course there will be a life demo included.
